This entry is part 2 of 18 in the series Tarot Card Meanings

Almost every movie that features tarot cards includes at some point the card known as the unnamed arcana, number 13, or death. It’s easy to see how this card can be frightening for those new to tarot. But putting aside superstition, just what exactly does this card mean?

The Tarot Death Card – First Impressions

The Della Rocca unnamed arcana is very similar to most Tarot of Marseille type decks.  The primary figure is a skeleton alive with jaws open in the impression of speech.  What is it saying? Its hands are hard at work shoveling with the scythe. The scythe is a tool used to cut wheat and other crops for harvest.  In the harvest of our lives, what can be said to be our fruit? To what end are our lives headed? What can we take with us?
The ground all around is littered with objects. Each could be said to represent something of value:

  • The emperor’s crown – Temporal power
  • The pope’s cap – Spiritual position
  • Jewels – Material wealth and possessions
  • Art palette – Beauty
  • Flag/banner – National pride

The Tarot Death Card speaks of balance and equanimity. There is nothing here to fear.

All of these are left desolate and meaningless before the figure of arcana 13.  Untouched in the background is a clean mountain peak.

What in your life will transcend the ending of your physical existence?

Tarot on The Tarot Death Card

13 Tarot Death Card
At the core of Arcana 13 we have peace. It’s been said that much of human life revolves around the denial, repression or other efforts to transcend the reality of our physical deaths. The Tarot Death Card’s message is very different. It tells us of balance and equanimity. There is nothing here to fear.

Arcana 13 in its own words

Though I rule a realm of power and riches, I’m usually left alone with my treasures. Few wish to join me, though I give my gifts freely. My actions are more about letting go than grabbing hold. My kingdom is one of dignity.

When I appear a journey is imminent. Often this is on the physical level. Yet this is not always about the end of physical life. Rather it may be a time of growth and separation from created and material forms which no longer serve. Think of baby teeth falling away to make way for the larger ones which fit an adult mouth.

What I offer is the inner understanding which can help you to release into the change which will come with or without your willing participation.

Another view (From top to bottom)

Many fight the changes I herald. The way through the transition is to understand and (if necessary) grieve for those things which are no more, and especially those dreams which will never come to fruition. In this way, balance will come and allow peace to guide your way.
