UPDATE: An easier to use method is available here: How to predict the weather

Yes. It’s true. You can predict the weather using nothing more than a deck of tarot cards and your skill as a reader.

For this to work well, I recommend that you use a traditional tarot de marseille (TdM) deck.  There are many reasons for this which I’ll get into in more detail in future posts.  If you don’t have a TdM tarot deck, any deck with non-scenic pips1 will work in a pinch.  If you only have a Rider-Waite or Thoth style deck available, use that.  It’s much better you read and develop your skills now, today, than to wait for a future time that may never happen.

This post provides a sketch of a workable method. If you would like to see examples or further elaboration, leave a comment on facebook below.

The Basics of Weather Prediction

This model is based on the ancient idea of the four elements of air, fire, earth and water. All you need to know is that each of these elements may be associated with a season of the year and a tarot suit.  You’ll use the qualities of each element to make your predictions.

Season: Summer Spring Winter Autumn
Element: Fire Air Water Earth
Qualities: Hot
and Dry

Cold

Suit:
Swords Cups Coins Batons/
Wands

Note: Please don’t get distracted by which elements are linked to which tarot suit. Use whichever attribution makes most sense to you. I’ve had good success with these traditional ones: Fire = Swords, Air = Cups, Water = Coins, Earth = Wands.

The Method

For most certainly I tell you, whoever may tell this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and doesn’t doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is happening; he shall have whatever he says. -Mark 11.23, World English Bible

The actual mechanics of the spread are simplicity itself.  Draw two cards from a well mixed deck and place them side by side. Together they will determine your prediction for tomorrow’s weather. It’s recommended that you make your predictions the night before.  Write them down as you make them. Include the date you’re predicting, the cards you drew, and what you predict. The next day, update your record with what actually happened. This will help you refine your method. After 30 days, you will be amazed at what transpires.

You may want to start with only the pip cards.  Once you feel comfortable, you can branch out to using the full tarot deck.

One last note. You will have to tailor your predictions based on the weather that makes sense for your location and time of year. A blizzard in Sydney in January is not likely!

Interpreting each card

Reversals

Handle reversals in whatever way you normally do.  If you use them, use them here. If you sometimes or never use them, ignore them.   They are not needed for weather prediction in this method.

Aces

Aces are considered the purest essence of the element and season associated with the suit.  This is what is coming in, but has not yet manifested.  So Aces could be considered a change coming a few days hence.

Pips – 2 through 10

These cards indicate the degree of the qualities of the element and season associated with the suit. For your interpretation, consider 2 the least and 10 the greatest.

Weather Prediction Pip Meanings

Courts

The court cards believe themselves to be superior to the pips. They will work to exert themselves over the pips.

Trumps (Majors)

Each of the trumps may be associated with a given season. An explanation of how this works is beyond the scope of this post. You can refer to the diagram below, or you can simply use an intuitive approach.

I Magician Spring XI Force Summer XXI World Autumn
II Papess Autumn XII Hanged Man Autumn
III Empress Winter XIII Winter 0 Fool Spring
IV Emperor Summer XIIII Temperance Spring
V Pope Spring XV Devil Summer
VI Lover Spring XVI Tower Autumn
VII Chariot Summer XVII Star Autumn
VIII Justice Autumn XVIII Moon Winter
VIIII Hermit Autumn XVIIII Sun Summer
X Wheel Spring XX Judgement Spring

The trump card determines the prediction. An ace, pip or court card will always defer to the trump.  In other words, the weather will be what the trump suggests. The other card adds detail.

Interpreting the combination

If you have two pip cards

The first card is moving into the second. Use this to determine your prediction.

If you have two trump cards

These powerful energies may be working well together, or not. Use the seasonal attributions and your knowledge of the trump card’s character to determine your weather prediction.

If you have two court cards

This situation is similar to that of two trumps, though with significantly less intensity.

If you have a pip and a court

The court cards believe themselves to be superior to the pips. They will work to exert themselves over the pips. Use this to make your weather prediction.

If you have a pip and a trump

The trump determines the weather. The pip adds some flavor to the trump.

If you have a trump and a court

The court doesn’t want to yield, but ultimately must.

Take the 30 day challenge

Use this, or your own method, to predict the weather each day for the next month. Would love to hear how it goes for you.

Predict the weather using your tarot deck? Can you do it? Does it work?  You’ll never know unless you make the effort with faith.
