The Magician or Bateleur (Juggler) is the first card of the Major Arcana. Number one stands alone. It is the start, the beginning of something. And so, our Magician is initiating something. What is it?

Is he a servant of others now moving to a role of master of self?

The Magician Tarot Card – First Impressions

The Magician looks to the side.  He’s watchful.  His feet are flat on the ground. With his wand in his left hand, and his coin in his right, we wonder how integrated he is as a person. “Does the left hand know what the right is doing?”

There are many things on the table before him.  Yet, he looks at none of them.  Is he perhaps unsure of what to do with them, implying form without substance? Is he waiting for someone else to appear? Or is he a person who was a servant of others now moving to a role of master of self?

The Magician (or Bateleur) began his journey with a sharp and curious mind.  He didn’t get very far however before he had an experience which changed his life.  This epiphany shifted his previously self-centered orientation towards a focus on that which is greater and lasting.  It’s not clear what exactly happened – only that it had a significant impact on the magician.  When he recovered and came again to himself, he found himself engaged in a livelihood.  Moreover he was recognized as a young man of skill and potential.  In this state he remains.  His mind is that of apprentice, always remembering the experience he has yet to master or even comprehend.

The Magician’s Highest Expression

When operating from his highest potential, the Magician remembers the experience which has transformed his existence, and uses this as a basis of empathy and compassion for those who come across his path.

The Magician’s Lowest Expression

When operating in a low expression, the Magician remains focused on his own desires and purposes to the detriment of others.  He does that which supports his own sense of safety.

Great post! The Magician is still for me one of the most difficult cards to interpret when it appears in a reading, I don’t know why… it is such an elusive fellow. I think it’s because the Magician never reveals his tricks, lol!

The fact that he is not looking at his table may also mean “mastery” – he knows his craft so well, his hands are so used to doing what he does that he doesn’t even needs his eyes anymore. He may show his art while starting at the people who watch him, making it appear even more magical. :)
