While sitting early this morning at my regular table at the Jackson Heights, New York Starbucks, I started shuffling my beloved Noblet deck in preparation for this post. Almost immediately 3 cards whipped out of my hands! This was a first for me, and reminded me of last week’s surprise when I laid out the tarot devil card spread.
The 3 flying cards were nowhere to be seen. Unwilling to give them up as lost, I broadened my search. They soon turned up lodged deeply in a nearby shopping bag!
The enthusiastic Knight of Wands is ready to move.
Knight of Wands – First Impressions
Get ready for new information. When it comes it will be time to move quickly and without hesitation!
As we continue with this weekly series on card meanings, you’ll see that I’m attempting to disregard any previous conceptions about the cards. You and I both are discovering at the same time what tarot chooses to reveal about itself.
What first strikes me about his card is the horse. The horse, the mechanism by which the Knight moves, could be seen as a symbol of the Knight’s physical nature. The red bit in its mouth reminds me of a tongue, and so of hunger, thirst, and other elemental drives. The horse is attentive and calm. Continuing the metaphor, the Knight’s physical needs have been mastered, and the deeper instinctual drives sublimated to the service of the conscious will.
The ground shows healthy vegetation suggesting Summer. This is a time of vitality and strength in the natural world, and suggests the Knight of Wands too is at the height of his power.
The horse’s hoofs are well-cared for. It’s dressed for speed and function, tasteful yet not overly fancy. The same could be said for the attire of the Knight. The horse’s feet move up and down in place, indicating a readiness to move.
The Knight raises the wand high in his left hand, and looks at it. His hidden impulses and conscious mind are aligned in service to his purpose. Both Knight and mount are looking in the same direction, to the left of where they had been going. Taken as a whole this seems to be saying, Get ready for new information. When it comes it will be time to move quickly and without hesitation!
Tarot on Knight of Wands
The story of the Knight of Wands (cards 1, 2 and 3).
The Knight of Wands1 has come from a time of conflict and battle. It ended with a stalemate. Our Knight was neither scarred nor humiliated, though what he witnessed left him convinced and committed to act nobly and honorably for the benefit of others not able to protect themselves.
The Knight at present has yet to find the person or people he seeks to serve. His true soul purpose has yet to be revealed, though he leaves no stone unturned in his effort to discover it.
Tarot tells us that the Knight will succeed wonderfully in his quest. Those he serves will find renewed security, stability and well-being. One question remains for our Knight. Will he realize that his mission has been accomplished?
The best and the worst of the Knight of Wands
At best the Knight binds his quest and will towards the spiritual betterment and even enlightenment of those he serves. In this role he is a teacher and guide with energy, dynamism and charisma.
At his worst he focuses exclusively on the physical and material comfort of others. Once the foundation for the next generation is secure, he is content to watch from afar, never awakening others to quests of their own.

Will you be offended if I tell you that this horse always makes me smile? Because depending on how I look at him, he seems to be gossiping… like, telling the knight something really mean about someone else. Like:
Horse: …is THAT was he calls galloping? Bah! An pachyderm on a bicycle could do it better! Pfft.
Knight: Well, he barely looks like a horse anyway. More like a prime candidate for natural deselection.
Horse: Definitely! *snickers*
All right, I’m getting absurd tarot ideas! I just think that this horse has such a clever face… he’s not just another oblivious looking animal, he thinks, and he’s kinda malicious…

Marina,
You’re so right – this is a chatty horse!
One of the best qualities of the Noblet is the expressiveness of the faces. It makes it a wonderful reading deck.
Glad you’re home safely. Always appreciate your comments.

Thanks for sharing yet another card with us! Im ust say I never had such a noble vision of the Knight of Wands… I always thought about him being rushed and fiery and impulsive. You definitely gave me something to think about.
But to tell the truth, when I see the Jean Noblet Knight of Wands, i must say he doesn’t look rushed at all! He seems to be thoughtful… like he and his horse talking and wondering if they really should pursuit or not. Are deciding where to cast they energy.
The horse in this image looks like he’s talking to the knight, because its mouth is slightly open. For me, that would mean that this knight listens to the messages that comes from his instincts, his most “animal side”.

Hi Marina,
You are too right – he does seem to be listening to his horse, or the messages that come from his instincts. Great point.
Was fantastic to see you and get to know you at the Readers Studio. Look forward to hearing about your new tarot pursuits
