The International Icon Tarot is a creation of Robin Ator, who also designed the whimsical Ator tarot. It’s a Rider Waite Smith (RWS) deck with a twist – all of the card images are made in the style of universally understood signs.
The following tarot deck interview was done using FireRaven’s spread described in the Interview with the Il Meneghello Soprafino post.
Interviewing the International Icon Tarot
1. Tell me about yourself. What is your most important characteristic?
I shine the light of truth from the deepest parts outward. If there is darkness, black and white thinking or wrong beliefs present, I offer a gentle, non-threatening and fresh perspective. This can bring a sense of relief and freedom to your clients.
2. What are your strengths as a tarot deck?
I’m a playful and surprising deck. I’m curious and hardworking. I’m also a tarot deck that can hide in plain sight. Because I appear simple, familiar and non-threatening, I can travel anywhere and be used with clients who (a) are not otherwise open to tarot reading or (b) may be stuck in fixed and rigid understandings of the meanings of each tarot card.
3. What are your limits as a tarot deck?
As a tarot deck I see everything as possible and communicate optimistically and with a sense of empowerment. This may paint an almost deceptively halcyon picture at times – which may not always be the most helpful in certain situations.
4. What are you here to teach us?
I can help readers move fearlessly into their roles as tarot consultants and guides. With me as partner your tarot readings will take your clients far from where they (and you) may expect. Get onboard. Let’s go!
5. How can we best learn from and collaborate with you?
I’m a more symbolic tarot deck than many RWS readers may be used to reading with. I work by stimulating connections and memories of which you may not be aware, or may not otherwise bring into your tarot reading sessions. Be willing to consider and play with the ideas which seem to want to jump into your mind during our work together.
6. What is the potential outcome of our working relationship?
You may well become freer in your tarot readings and more willing to be public in the use of your skills. You will certainly be more visible, and will likely attract a broader clientele.
How can readers get copies of the International Icon Tarot?
This is a self-published deck which is available directly from the artist, Robin Ator, at the International Icon Tarot website for $29.95 + shipping, and is highly recommended.

Hi Alec,
First off, thank you so much for advising me on which deck to buy. Secondly, I found this “interview” a tarot deck a very innovative means of familiarizing oneself with the deck. Lastly, I just wanted to know- How do I interpret a reversed Sun card in a reading? (any position) and also, if I were to get the Devil card in the Hopes and Fears position, what does that mean?
Hi Madhuri,
There are a range of ways to understand reversals. In starting you may want to ignore reversals until you have a good grasp on all the cards. Even then, you can get very good readings without using reversals.
This comment field isn’t the best place for card meaning interpretations. Each card has a very large range of possibilities. It depends a lot on the question and the other cards, too!

This deck is so fantastic! I just loved the colors in your spread… I believe that color is one of the greatest symbolisms of this particular deck. I don’t own it, but seeing it in a spread made me interested!
I never interviewed a deck before… didn’t know it was done. It an interesting way of start using a new deck, that you still don’t know very well. Where did you learn this spread?
Hi Marina,
This is a fantastic and relatively unknown deck. Hopefully more people will learn about it and support the artist by purchasing copies.
The deck interview spread was originally published on the Aeclectic “spreads” forum. I’ve modified it very slightly and continue to find it one of the best ways to start connecting with a new deck. It also works well on well-loved decks. If you decide to try it, would love to hear how it works for you.
Look forward to meeting you at this year’s Readers Studio next week.
Alec
