Dodal Tarot Interview

The Dodal tarot as restored by Jean Claude Flornoy was released in a full 78 card version in 2009. This deck is a painstaking recreation of the Dodal deck of 1650 and deserves a place in the hands of all tarot readers who have even a passing interest in historical tarot decks.

The Flornoy Noblet is one of my primary reading decks. Hence I was keen to get a copy of the Dodal deck. My first impression was not what I would have expected. This deck is BIG. The size reminded me of the Rohrig deck, which was not easy for me to handle. Somehow this Dodal deck is easily shuffled. My initial hesitation came from the images themselves. Frankly, the intensity of them frightened me a little. Picking them up a few months later, I’m finding the cards clear and approachable. I’m grateful – for these cards are made for public readings. People see them on a table and naturally gravitate over to see what they have to say. ¹

1. Tell me about yourself. What is your most important characteristic?

While I can easily help you judge the causes and reasons for things, at heart I look to the future. My delight is in planning.

2. What are your strengths as a tarot deck?

I pierce through deception. I can help you see through dark passageways. My power waits for the right person to pick me up. You can think of me as a sword. I’m not for everyone. Those who fit with me will not find a better companion.

3. What are your limits as a tarot deck?

I’m tired of waiting. I may be royalty, but sitting on a shelf of honor for all these years feels like servitude. Give me something to do. Please.

4. What are you here to teach us?

Timing and accuracy are everything. Tarot reading requires many skills. If you are a reader, I can help you hone their clarity and specificity.

5. How can we best learn from and collaborate with you?

Are you used to a Rider-Waite-Smith deck? If so, feel free to use that deck in conjunction. Keep your balance. Give yourself whatever time you need to become comfortable. All roots of tarot wisdom draw from the same spring. If you want to learn faster, ask the same questions with multiple decks. Your understanding will grow.

6. What is the potential outcome of our working relationship?

You will become a faster reader, more sure of yourself, and able to stand strong in the face of both approval and approbation.

7. Any final words?

I long to help you find true happiness in your heart and soul. Though my size may be larger than you’re used to and my images bold, my heart is gentle as a song of peace. May you find rest.
