When was the last time you used a three card spread? Whether you have been reading cards for one year or thirty, three cards can shed clear light on just about any issue you might desire.
Here are some of the best three card spreads. Which ones of these have you used?
1. The Story
This spread differs from most others in that the card positions themselves have no specific meaning. Instead, the cards are read as a narrative. This is a truly “intuitive” reading.
2. Past-Present-Future
This is the classic three card spread. Beloved by many readers for good reason.
3. Do This – Don’t Do This – Overview
One of my favorites. An easy way to get insight on a perplexing situation or one in which there are many possible actions.
4. Choice 1 – Choice 2 – Situation
When there are two ways to go, and you need help in making your decision
5. Problem – Background – Advice
Good for a tricky situation, and also for a daily spread
6. Mind – Body – Spirit
Also good for a daily spread. Can be used in two ways: (a) What your mind – body – spirit need, or (b) What you’re thinking about, what you need, what will set you free.
7. Yes if – No if – Maybe if
Can give you insight into yes or no questions. To use this spread analyze each card to get your answer.
Alternative: 3 upright = yes. 0 upright = no. 1, 2 = maybe
8. What you know – What you don’t know – Advice
Good for making sure.
9. Blessings: From yourself – From your loved ones – From Spirit
This is a surprisingly encouraging spread. Try it when you’re feeling down. The first card indicates the blessings you bring to yourself. The next card shows the blessings your friends and family are bringing you now. The last card are those blessings coming to you from outside.
Hope you enjoy these. If they’re helpful to you, would love to hear of your experiences through Facebook. Be well, and keep enjoying tarot

Dear Alec, I’m a beginner. I wonder whether the positions of the cards are the same in these 9 spreads? Should I order them “1-2-3″ or “3-2-1″ or form a triangle?
Thank you very very much!!
Hi Gwendolyn,
You as the reader always determine the meaning of each position. Placing them in “1-2-3″ order, “3-2-1″ order or a triangle are all good. The important thing is to remember which meaning you placed on each card position.

Brilliant site Alec!
Although I have been reading the Tarot for 30+ years only a year ago did I attempt looking for “lost” items (99% success rate). My website is only weeks old so not even sure whether that will work.
I am now going to try weather forecasting! lol
The only foreseeable problem I can imagine is that MY Summer is your Winter, me being in the Northern Hemisphere and assuming that you are in the South, so I will have to do “trial and error” run but will certainly let you know how it goes. Thank you so much!
Hi Mag,
Thanks for your comment. Everything will work equally well in the Southern hemisphere. Let me know how the trial goes. Enjoy!

I used for the last 20 years the 3 cards spread to attract customers.
It is so accurate that people want to know more so that is went I book them for a reading
Dear Michelle,
This is a brilliant idea. I can see how it would work very well. Do you mind if I try it?

Alec, thank you for collecting the simple wonder of 3-card spreads on one page! I have never tried the Blessings spread and indeed, it happened to be a surprisingly clear and encouraging one: I needed it! I will definitely use this one often! I used A King’s Journey tarot deck by Chanel Bayless, and the addition of the Spirit Suite makes it a very unique deck…. you will probably not be surprised that for a blessing from Spirit I got… right…. a card from the Suite of Spirit.
Thank you!
Victoria
What a great reading, Victoria. That blessings spread never fails to be an encouragement to me. So glad you found it helpful too.

Great post Alec! I use 3-cards spreads all the time, they are simple and yet give important information. I specially like using them with Robert Place’s method of telling a “story” with the cards, just by seeing what picture they create together.
Thanks for the Spreads suggestions!
Marina,
One of these days I would love to get a 3 card reading from you. Did you know that Robert Place gave a seminar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last month? He showed the original tarot cards in the Museum’s collection. It was fascinating.
